RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team made quick work of Morehead State University to close its home swing and win its third straight match after sweeping the Eagles in three sets Wednesday night at McBrayer Arena.
EKU won by scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-17.
After playing a game of back-and-forth in the first frame MSU came out in set two and threw the first punch with a kill from Lauren Rokey. A service error from the Eagles then evened the score at 1-1 and the teams exchanged points to the 7-5 mark.
Cassie Knutson then came up with a commanding kill to spark a 13-2 run for the Colonels, 20-7, creating a hole that Morehead State could not find a way out of. Knutson again notched a kill to end the set and set the tone for set three.
In the third stanza Eastern Kentucky played from behind until the 4-4 mark when an Alli Evans attack error gave EKU its first lead of the set, 5-4. Kills from
Kaylin Johnson,
Nikki Drost and Knutson assisted in opening up a five point lead for the Colonels, 10-5. But, Morehead State's Liz Allen found an answer by logging a kill to send the Eagles on a 5-1 run to draw within one, 11-10. MSU kept the set tight down the stretch until a Johnson kill and Drost service ace paved the way for Eastern to tally seven unanswered points, running away with the set, 24-15. Morehead State made two more final stabs to the EKU lead using a kill from Evans and a Colonel error, but were unable to hang on, dropping the set 25-17.
"I thought tonight we weren't serving as aggressive early on and that was to Morehead's advantage," Head Coach
Lori Duncan stated. "Then in the second set we got more aggressive. In the third set Nikki was really aggressive, that makes your offensive predictable and forces them into hitting errors. You put a lot of pressure on a team when you serve at them aggressively. I thought we did a good job staying aggressive in sets two and three."
EKU logged six service aces on the night.
Celina Sanks led all players with 13 kills, Drost followed closely with nine. The Colonels kept all Eagles in single-digits with Rokey leading at nine.
Ferragonio led all players with 18 assists, while Jordan Jones led Morehead State with 17.
Eastern Kentucky travels to Clarksville, Tennessee on Saturday where it will take on an undefeated Austin Peay State team. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
