RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior forward
Emmi Carroll scored the equalizer in the 71
st minute to help the first-place Eastern Kentucky University soccer team battle second-place Murray State to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at EKU Soccer Field.
With the draw, EKU (7-3-4, 4-0-3 OVC) remains unbeaten in OVC play and atop the conference standings. The Colonels have three games remaining in the regular season.
Carroll had a chance to give EKU the lead when Murray State (9-1-2, 4-0-2 OVC) was whistled for a handball in the box in the first half; however, her resulting penalty kick sailed wide.
With the Colonels down 1-0 late in the second half, Carroll retaliated. She intercepted an MSU clearance inside the box and fired a shot from 15 yards out that found the back of the net. The Cincinnati, Ohio native leads EKU with six goals on the year, and she is now tied with Nikki Donnelly for second all-time in goals scored in EKU history (17).
Sophomore
Sam Eastes made a nice run through the Murray State defense late in regulation and fired a shot that would have won it, but Racer goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald made a save that sent the game into overtime.
"We're happy to get a point out of the game and we're proud of how the girls played in the second half and overtime," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We let our nerves get the best of us in the first half but we were able to calm ourselves at halftime."
Carroll and senior forward
Jordan Foster led EKU with two shots apiece. Both of Carroll's shots were on goal, while Foster had one shot on target. In total, Eastern fired 10 shots at the goal, five of those being on target.
Despite bobbling a save that led to a Racer score midway through the second half, senior goalkeeper
Anna Hall rebounded by tallying six saves on the night, three alone in the second overtime, and two of which were dramatic, diving saves in the final minute of the game that prevented the Murray State win.
MSU was led by Harriet Withers with four shots, two being on goal. The Colonel defense held Withers, who is third in the country in scoring with 12 goals, to her third lowest shot total of the season and her lowest since she had just two shots in the Racers' only loss to Saint Louis on September 17.
Miyah Watford scored the Racers' lone goal in the 52
nd minute.
Eastern will be back in action when the Colonels travel to take on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. Game time from Alabama is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
