RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University's women's basketball team did not allow a point in the first quarter, jumped out to an 18-0 lead and rolled past visiting Ohio Christian University, 69-45, on Monday night at McBrayer Arena.
The Colonels (3-6) did not allow the Trailblazers (6-6) to score their first point of the game until the 8:22 mark of the second quarter and did not make their first field goal until 7:56 remained in the second. OCU went 0-for-16 from the field in the first quarter, including 0-for-6 from behind the arc, and had three shots blocked.
Eastern knocked down 8-of-17 in the first quarter, including 2-of-4 from deep.
A'Queen Hayes scored EKU's first four points.
Abby Wright's spinning jumper in the lane made it 6-0. An offensive rebound and put back from
Madison Pierce and a three-pointer from the left wing by
Bria Bass capped the 18-0 run to start the game.
Eastern Kentucky stretched the margin to 20-plus for the first time on a lay-up and free throw by Hayes that pushed the score to 34-12. The Colonels had a 20-point lead at halftime, 36-16.
EKU held the visitors to 12 percent shooting (4-for-33) in the first half. The home team shot 43 percent from the field, and made 4-of-8 from three-point range. The Colonels blocked seven shots and out-rebounded OCU by 18, 35-17.
Six straight points to end the third quarter and begin the fourth quarter allowed Eastern Kentucky to take a 30-point lead for the first time.
Tae'Lour Richardson's jumper with 9:32 left in the game made it 59-29.
Four players scored in double figures for EKU led by Wright and
Shay Solomon with 15 points each. Bass finished with 13 and Hayes had 12. Hayes also had a team-best nine rebounds and four assists. Seven different Colonels finished with one block each.
Eastern shot 41 percent for the game, out-scored Ohio Christian 38-8 in the paint and turned 20 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points. The Trailblazers shot 21 percent from the field. Michaela Puckett led all players with 17 points for OCU.
The Colonels will return to action on Dec. 28 when they begin Ohio Valley Conference play on the road at Jacksonville State University. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
