Murray State Pulls Away Late for 70-64 Win

MURRAY, Ky.
 – A timely three pointer from senior Mariah Massengill knotted the score at 64 with 1:35 to play, but the Racers of Murray State University held on for a 70-64 win Monday at the CFSB Center.
 
Following Massengill's long ball, the Racers scored six unanswered to close the game and clinch the win.
 
Four Colonels finished in double digits, marking the fourth time this season. Senior Alexus Cooper led the way with 14 points, as Massengill and senior Shavontae Naylor added 13 each. Massengill also finished with five assists. Senior Jalen O'Bannon chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Racers opened a 62-59 lead in the final period, before senior Zee Willix pulled down a critical offensive rebound and finished the putback to cut into the Murray State lead with 4:08 to play.
 
Eastern went scoreless for the next 2:35 but Massengill's three pointer kept the Colonels within reach, however, Murray State converted on its next two possessions and sealed the win with two late free throws.
 
Tied at 28 at the break, the Colonels connected on seven of their first 10 field goals to open the second half. O'Bannon's jumper in the paint gave EKU a 30-29 lead in the opening minutes of the second half.
 
Massengill poached a Murray pass and found Naylor for the score, extending the lead to three.
 
Following a Racer score, Willix skillfully dished out touch passes on consecutive possessions, helping the Colonels extend their lead to five with scores from O'Bannon and Naylor.
 
With a four point lead, Massengill found Cooper from the left wing for the long ball which gave the Colonels its largest lead of the game with 3:26 left in the third.
 
The Racers answered with a three pointer on the other end to quickly trim the lead back to four. After a Massengill score, the Racers scored six unanswered in 1:16 to knot the score at 45 late in the third and carried a 48-47 lead into the final stanza.
 
EKU returns to McBrayer Arena for Saturday's matchup against Morehead State University. Saturday's game is scheduled for a 4:30 tip.
