Colonels Cruise To Series Win Over CSU

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Despite falling behind by a run early, Eastern Kentucky cruised to a 10-3 victory over Chicago State on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.  EKU won the series 2-1.

The Colonels (12-9) have won three non-conference, three-game weekend series for the first time in program history.  Eastern swept Oakland and Youngstown State earlier in the season.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Nick Howie drove in a pair with a single up the middle and Eastern never trailed again.  A two-run single by Logan Starnes in the bottom of the third made it 6-1.  Alex Holderbach made it an 8-3 game with a single down the left field line in the fourth that brought home two runs.

Ben Fisher hit his fifth home run in the last five games and his eighth of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The solo shot gave EKU a 9-3 advantage.  He finished the day 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs.  Fisher hit four home runs and drove in 11 runs in the three game series against Chicago State.

Howie finished 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.  Holderbach had a 3-for-5 day with two runs and three RBIs.  He hit his second home run of the season in the eighth inning.

Bryan Quillens (1-2) earned his first victory of the season after tossing four innings of relief.  He allowed three hits, two runs, walked four and struck out three.

Cody Freund had two hits in three at bats for Chicago State (4-12).

"Really proud of how our guys bounced back to win this series after dropping Friday's game," said EKU Head Coach Edwin Thompson. "Fisher hitting another big home run, Holderbach getting his second of the year, the offense stepped up. The big story of the day for us was getting Eric Nerl on the mound for the first time this year. Quillens following him and securing the win was big too."

The Colonels will host Northern Kentucky University on Tuesday.  The game at Earle Combs Stadium is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
