RICHMOND, Ky.
 – Junior Haley Kemper's equalizer in the 63rd minute sent the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a 1-1 draw with Austin Peay in the Colonels' OVC opener on Friday afternoon.

APSU – which boasted one of the best non-conference records in the OVC (5-2) – struck first when star forward Kirstin Robertson scored off a cross from Morgan Jackson in the 33rd minute at EKU Soccer Field.

In the 63rd minutes, the Colonels (3-3-2) responded. Junior Bailly Bounds sent a high, arching corner kick to the far corner of the goal and Kemper headed it in for the equalizer. It was Bounds' first assist of the season, and Kemper's first goal since her redshirt freshman season of 2015.

Seniors Emmi Carroll and Jordan Foster both attempted dangerous game-winners late in the game, but neither converted.

"Today was exactly what we expected: an intense, physically-demanding OVC game," head coach Nick Flohre said. "We're all disappointed we weren't able to find the winning goal, but our players should be proud of their effort. We played with the intensity that will help us win games as we go through the conference season."

EKU edged APSU in shots, 12-11. The Colonels attempted nine corner kicks on the day, compared to the Govs' two.

Carroll led all players in the game with five shots, three of which were on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Anna Hall made three saves to help Eastern earn the point.

Kemper and freshman defender Katie Shaffer played all 110 minutes of the draw on EKU's backline.

The Colonels return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to play in-state rival Morehead State at 1:00 p.m.
