RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team dropped its home opener, 2-0, to Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.

The game was scoreless at the half; however, Gardner-Webb finally broke through in the 61
st minute when Jana Braun took a pass from Stina Kleppe and fired in a goal from eight yards out.

The Bulldogs added an insurance score in the 74
th minute when Ty Snell took advantage of a failed clearance and buried a shot from six yards out.

Sarah Owusu both put shots on target in the final 10 minutes, but GWU keeper Keely Brown denied both to preserve the win.

"We made this game much harder than it needed to be and let Gardner-Webb control the first half," head coach
Nick Flohre said. "I thought we got better control of the second half, but made two very bad errors and Gardner-Webb took advantage of them."

Both teams attempted eight shots in the game, and EKU (2-3-1) attempted two more corner kicks than GWU; however, it was the Bulldogs that took advantage of their chances.

"Until we all accept that what we're doping isn't good enough and raise our standard of training and competing, we're going to struggle," Flohre added.

EKU returns to action on Tuesday, September 12, when the Colonels host East Tennessee State at 5:00 p.m.
