Box Score I Greg Stotelmyer's Call of Nick Mayo's Historic Night
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Junior forward
Nick Mayo broke Eastern Kentucky's career blocks record and surpassed 1,500 career points in a 84-73 loss at Belmont on Thursday at the Curb Event Center.
When Mayo blocked a lay-up attempt from Amanze Egekeze with 16:20 left in the first half, he broke the school record of 115 career blocks set by Mike Smith (1987-92). His jumper with 10:15 left in the game gave him 1,500 career points. He surpassed that with a lay-up and free throw on Eastern's next possession.
Â
Mayo moved past Charles Mitchell (1970-73) into 10th place on Eastern Kentucky's all-time scoring list when he made a free throw with 3:25 remaining to play for his 1,508th career point. He finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block.
Â
A quick start staked EKU to an eight-point lead. The Colonels used an early 9-2 run to turn a one-point deficit into an eight-point advantage.Â
JacQuess Hobbs scored the final five points on a free throw and a pair of jumpers. His second, with 12:15 left in the opening half, put the visitors in front 18-10.
Â
The Bruins found the answer, out-scoring Eastern 27-7 over the next eight minutes. Back-to-back three-pointers from Egekeze and Kevin McClain put Belmont out in front by 12, 37-25, with 4:14 to go in the first half.
Â
Belmont continued to lead by 12 at halftime, 41-29. The Bruins made nine 3-pointers and shot 57 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play. EKU made 48 percent of its shots, but just 3-of-10 from deep.
Â
After Belmont scored the first basket of the second half to go up 14, the Colonels rolled off a big run of their own with the help of a 6-for-6 start from the field. A 15-4 spurt cut the deficit to three.Â
Zach Charles made a three-pointer,
Dujuanta Weaver nailed two treys and Hobbs scored four points during the run. A lay-up from Hobbs capped the run and made it 47-44 with 16:06 remaining in the game.
Â
EKU never got any closer. The Bruins scored the next seven points to go back up 10 and led by six or more the rest of the game.
Â
Charles, Hobbs and Weaver all finished with 14 points. Hobbs also had eight assists and four steals.
Â
The Colonels shot 49 percent from the field. Belmont made 59 percent of its shots, including 14-of-31 from three-point range for 45 percent.
Â
Egekeze had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Belmont. Austin Luke had 19 points and seven assists.
Â
Eastern Kentucky will be back in action on Saturday at Tennessee State. Tip-off in Nashville is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET.
