DELAND, Fla. –
The Eastern Kentucky University tennis teams split the day at Stetson to open spring break. The women picked up a 4-3 victory over the home team while the men fell to the University of Southern Mississippi (10-3), 4-1.

Due to the threat of rain the matches began with singles first, only to play doubles if it would decide the match.

Stetson picked up a win at No. 5 singles to take an early 1-0 lead, but Alexandra Belle responded with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles to even the score, 1-1.

Laura Argente (6-2, 6-2) and Kristina Lagoda (6-0, 6-2) won the top two matches to put Eastern ahead, 3-1.

After SU (7-4) collected the final two, to again even the score, doubles began.

The Colonels swept the matches winning 7-5 at No. 1 and 6-0 at No. 3.

"Hats off to our top three singles girls," Head Coach Rob Oertel stated. "Very good wins today, but even better was that the scores were so convincing over good players."

Ramon van Flymen took the lone point for the men (4-12) at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4.

The teams return to action tomorrow with the women squaring off against Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. and the men taking on Stetson at 5 p.m.

Live statistics will be available for the men's match.
