ROCK HILL, S.C. – Johnkyria Alston hit a walk-off single, bringing home Paige Murphy to break the tie over Youngstown State, 7-6, and secure the weekend sweep for the Eastern Kentucky University softball team at the Winthrop Invitational.
EKU (11-5) scored first after Destinee Lizzmore hit a two-run home run in the third inning.
The Penguins (4-8) loaded the bases in the fifth and plated six runs to take the lead, 6-2.
Alston singled to begin the sixth and start the late game rally. Mattira Morales walked to put two on for Carly Robinson. The freshman obliterated the ball, sending it over right center for a three-run bomb to bring EKU within one, 6-5.
YSU was unable to bring any across with clutch pitching from Murphy McRoberts in the top of the seventh.
Lizzmore saw just one pitch and collected a solo-shot to tie the game.
Mollie Paulick pitched a shutout in game one over the University of Albany (3-5), throwing the entire game and dealing 10 strikeouts and just one walk.
Morales got on first for EKU in the bottom of the second. Robinson collected an RBI single after a single to left center to put the Colonels up early, 1-0.
In the third Lizzmore and Paige Murphy walked to put two on for Alston. The senior cleaned the bases with a round-tripper to left center, 4-0.
The win over Albany was program win and Head Coach Jane Worthington's 700th career win. The number makes Worthington just the 32nd active Division I head coach to reach the milestone at the same university.
Eastern Kentucky opens at home this week on Wednesday when the welcome in the University of Dayton. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
