BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, 4-3, and the men's team fell at Samford on Sunday afternoon.

The women (4-7) took the first doubles match at No. 3 when Raquel Montalvo and Laura Argente Escamilla made quick work of Jana Hecking and Dominika Hrabalova, 6-1. After dropping the No. 1 match all eyes were on No. 2 where Kristina Lagoda and Viktorija Demcenkova battled and were edged, 7-6.

UAB took the match at No. 4 singles to go ahead 2-0. Lisa Friess came up with a big win at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3 to pull EKU within one.

Argente collected a win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 to even the match at 2 all.

The Blazers (4-8) took the next two to clinch the match.

Demcenkova picked up a win at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.

"Our top five girls each went 1-1 this weekend and we definitely played at a better level today," Head Coach Rob Oertel stated. "UAB is a bit of a better team than Samford, but unfortunately we still came up on the short end. Our second day outdoors and there definitely was a difference in our overall level of play. Good bounce back wins today by Laura, Viktorija and Lisa. If we continue to play at this level I look forward to seeing where we can go as a team through the spring."

Ramon van Flymen picked up the lone point for the men (4-11) at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-5 as they fell to Samford (5-5), 6-1.

Gabriel Ruiz and Juan Soria defeated Max Rebol and Justin Ghavami at No. 3 doubles, 7-5.

"It was a good effort from the guys this weekend," said Oertel. "Unfortunately the teams were just better."

Both squads will be back in action March 12 with the men at the University of Southern Mississippi at 3 p.m. and the women at Stetson for a 10 a.m. start.
