NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore
Miles Jones hit his first career grand slam, but Eastern Kentucky lost its Ohio Valley Conference opener, 15-5, at Belmont on Friday.
Â
Ryland Kerr was hit by a pitch to start the eighth inning and
Alex Holderbach followed with a double to center field. A walk by
Logan Stephens loaded the bases for the Colonels. Jones came in to pinch hit for designated hitter
Nick Howie. After looking at two balls outside the strike zone, Jones deposited the third pitch he saw over the wall for his second home run of the season and first grand slam of his two-year career.
Â
However, Eastern (5-9, 0-1 OVC) was down 14-1 when Jones drove in four. The Colonels never got any closer.
Â
The Bruins (4-9, 1-0 OVC) built a 3-0 lead before exploding for 10 runs in the fourth inning. Back-to-back hits by Zach Ehrhart and Jordan Henshaw drove in two runs each. Later in the fourth, Kyle Conger hit a three-run home run.
Â
Jones finished 1-for-1 with a run and four RBIs for Eastern Kentucky. Holderbach and
Cornell Nixon had two hits each. Ben Kocher went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs for the Bruins. Belmont starter Tyler Vaughn (1-1) tossed six innings, allowed five hits, walked two and struck out eight.
Â
EKU and Belmont will continue the conference series with game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
