RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team swung hot bats in day one of the EKU Invitational to roll to a pair of wins over Western Carolina and Northern Illinois.
The Colonels notched 15 hits over both games to score a combined 21 runs.
NIU scored first in game two, putting EKU behind for the first time during the day. Destinee Lizzmore found an answer in the bottom frame of the inning, notching a solo home run over the left center wall, 1-1.
Lizzmore reached again in the third inning to put one on for Paige Murphy who tattooed a ball to come up with a round-tripper of her own and put EKU up 3-1.
Johnkyria Alston was the next to stand at the plate for the Colonels and she kept in tempo, collecting a double. Freshman Zoe Mihalicz roped a two-run shot down the left field line to clean the bases and extend the lead, 5-1.
Northern Illinois (4-13) plated runs in the sixth and seventh but it wasn't enough as the Huskies fell 5-3.

In game one EKU pushed seven across in the first inning and nearly matched the number with six in the seventh to put Western Carolina (4-12) in an early 13-0 hole.
The Colonels added three more in the bottom of the third that proved lethal as EKU topped the Catamounts 16-0 in five innings.
Carly Robinson, Mattira Morales, Lizzmore and Mihalicz each notched home runs on the day while Murphy crushed two long balls.
Murphy McRoberts notched wins in both games today.
The Colonels move to 13-5 on the season and have won seven in a row.
