Murphy's Record-Breaking Day Propels EKU To Another League Sweep

GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX

OXFORD, Ala. –
Senior Paige Murphy took ownership of the single-season home runs record, single-season runs scored and career runs records as the Eastern Kentucky University softball team added another Ohio Valley Conference sweep to its resume after taking down Jacksonville State in a Sunday afternoon twin bill at Choccolocco Park. The Colonels won by scores of 5-2 and 5-1.

Eastern (33-14, 15-1 OVC) staged a come-from-behind win in game two, after trailing when a double pushed a Gamecock across in the bottom frame of the first.

Murphy opened the third stanza a walk, followed by a Hannah Clark single. Emily Corbitt singled up the middle plating two to take the lead, 2-1.

The Colonel bats came alive in the seventh after Destinee Lizzmore was hit by a pitch. Murphy cranked a two-run shot over the left center wall to extend the lead, 4-1, and notch her 17th homer of the season. Two batters later Corbitt followed suit, sending one off of the left field foul pole, 5-1.

JSU (27-22, 14-6 OVC) couldn't find an answer in the bottom of the seventh, as EKU cruised to victory.

Mollie Paulick (14-5) took the win in game two after tossing another complete game. The sophomore notched the save in game one.

"I felt in both games I was seeing the ball really well,  was able to stay patient at the plate and capitalize in key moments," Murphy stated. "It feels good to go home with four big wins. As a team we are playing really good ball at a key time in the season."

The Colonels jumped ahead early in game one. Zoe Mihalicz reached on a fielder's choice, and after a ground out, advanced to second.

Brooke Harrison collected a walk and both advanced on a wild pitch. The runners advanced again after a wild pitch on the third strike and Paulick reached. Lizzmore walked to load the bases for Murphy, who laced a double to center field to plate two, giving the Colonels a 3-0 advantage.

Clark singled to open the third stanza and advanced on another wild pitch. Robinson singled through the left side to bring her home, 4-0.

JSU cut into the lead in the fifth, after a two-run shot from Taylor Beshears, 4-2.

Corbitt doubled in the top frame of the seventh, but after two ground-outs added an insurance run, 5-2.

The Gamecocks threated in the final stanza, loading the bases. But, after a lengthy at-bat, JSU fouled one off in right field and Corbitt made a diving catch to end it and secure the win.

Murphy McRoberts moved to 11-4 from the circle after her game one performance.

The victories mark the first time since 2014 that EKU has taken beaten the Gamecocks.

The Colonels will put their 11-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday as they play host to Belmont University in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. ET.
