Colonels Drop Extra Inning Game In Series Opener Against Southeast Missouri

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky limited Southeast Missouri to two hits and two runs through nine innings, but the Redhawks scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning on their way to a 7-2 win in the opener of the Ohio Valley Conference baseball series on Thursday at Earle Combs Stadium.

Through nine innings, two EKU pitchers combined to hold SEMO to two hits, one walk and nine strike outs.

After Aaron Ochsenbein struck out the first batter of the 10th, Wade Stauss hit his seventh home run of the season.  Ochsenbein walked the next batter and struck out another to get two outs, but Trevor Ezell kept the inning alive with a single to left field to plate an insurance run.  Tristen Gagan followed with a 2-run double down the left field line.

The Colonels got on the board first when Will Johnson led off the bottom the first inning with a home run over the wall in right center.  It was his eighth of the season.  EKU made it 2-0 when Johnson scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error in the bottom of the third inning.

Ezell scored for Southeast on a wild pitch in the fourth.  A ground out by Peyton Faulkner in the fifth was enough to score the tying run for the Redhawks (24-28, 18-10 OVC).

Bryan Quillens started for Eastern Kentucky (27-27, 15-13 OVC).  He allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits in five and one-third innings.  He walked one and struck out three.  SEMO starter Carlos Vega allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in seven innings of work.  He walked five and struck out seven.

Casey Collins retired all 11 batters he faced in three and two-thirds innings of relief work for EKU.  He did not walk a batter and struck out six.

"I was really proud of how Bryan Quillens gave us an unbelievable start as a senior and Casey Collins out of the pen," Eastern Kentucky Head Coach Edwin Thompson said.  "Those guys as seniors coming out for their last time at the Turk were really special to see."

Logan Stephens went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Colonels.  Johnson finished 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Ezell finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Southeast Missouri.

The two teams are scheduled to continue their series on Friday at 6 p.m.
