RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team travels to play in the Elon Softball Opening Weekend Tournament in Elon, North Carolina to begin the 2019 season on Friday.

The Colonels will play four games over the weekend. EKU takes on Longwood University at 10 a.m. Friday morning, followed by Elon University at 4:45 p.m. Eastern squares off against Appalachian State Saturday at 12 p.m. They wrap up their weekend with Longwood Sunday at 11 a.m.

-This is the first ever meeting between EKU and Longwood. The Lancers went 38-16 last year and return Big South Preseason Player of the Year and co-pitcher of the year

-The Colonels second opponent on the weekend is Elon University. EKU leads the all-time series; 2-1, with the last meeting being in 2010 when the teams split a pair of contests.

-EKU leads the all-time series against Appalachian State, 4-0. The last meeting between the two teams was in 2008. EKU won all three contests that year.

-EKU returns seven of nine starters, and 14 of 16 players, off last year's 45-21 team.

-There are seven new faces, including five freshman and two D1 transfers.

-Last year the Colonels ranked fifth in the country in home runs per game and 19th in the country in slugging percentage. EKU ranked first in the OVC in home runs per game, scoring, slugging percentage and WL percentage. They ranked second in the conference in batting average and fielding percentage.Â

-First team and second team all-conference and all-newcomer team players:Â

Destinee Lizzmore was named to the first team All-OVC and all-newcomer team last year. Lizzmore was second on the team with a .321 batting average, with 14 home runs, 36 RBIs and a team-high 17 doubles.

Mollie Paulick was named first team all-conference after going 23-8 on the year with a team-best 2.38 ERA.

Hannah Clark was second team all-OVC last year after hitting .291 on the year and ranking second on the team in home runs (17) and RBIs (54).

Emily Corbitt and
Carly Robinson were named to the all-newcomer team. Corbitt hit .304 on the year with nine home runs and 37 RBIs. Robinson hit .233 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs.
