RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior
Marian Wolski scored the equalizer with just over a minute to play, sending the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a thrilling 3-3 draw with visiting Dayton in an exhibition match on Thursday.
Â
After Dayton rallied to take a 3-2 lead late in the game, the Colonels did not quit. Wolski intercepted the ball in the 89
th minute, dribbled into range and fired a beauty from just outside the box that found the upper left corner of the net.
Â
EKU jumped out to an early lead when redshirt sophomore
Sarah Owusu took a pass from Wolski and beat the Dayton goalkeeper one-v-one for a goal in the 35
th minute.
Â
The Flyers tied it with a score in the 48
th minute, but freshman
Maddy Lemery put the Colonels back on top in the 60
th minute, taking a pass from a fellow freshman
Audrey Anderson and flicking it past the keeper to make it 2-1.
Â
Dayton scored two goals in the final 30-minute period to take its first lead of the day, but Wolski's heroics knotted it up in the final minute.
"It's our hope we become known as a program who consistently bounces back and isn't afraid to score those important goals," head coach
Matt Cosinuke said. "Our family showed character and fight today. I'm proud of them for that. This was the first building block in a long season and a great learning opportunity against a quality Dayton team. We'll watch video, try to learn some lessons and get ready for Miami."
Â
Eastern will now host Miami (Ohio) in another exhibition on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Â
The Colonels open the regular season next Thursday, August 22, on the road at Ohio University. First touch from Athens is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
