@EKUFootball Game Week: Third Straight Road Game Awaits Colonels At Presbyterian

9/16/2019 8:30:00 AM

CLINTON, S.C. – Eastern Kentucky will play its third straight road game, on Saturday, at Presbyterian College in South Carolina.

Kickoff at Bailey Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.  The game will air live on ESPN+.  The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

INSIDE THE SERIES
-  This is the first-ever meeting on the football field between the two schools.

Mark Elder and Tommy Spangler have never faced each other as head coaches.

THE COLONELS
-  EKU (1-2) suffered a 19-7 loss at Indiana State on Saturday.  The Colonels were within a touchdown of taking the lead until the final three minutes of the game.

-  Eastern rushed for 148 yards against the Sycamores.  The EKU defense limited ISU to 133 passing yards.

-  The Colonels have not turned the ball over in either of their last two games.  Eastern leads the Ohio Valley Conference and is 10th in the nation in fewest turnovers.

Daryl McCleskey Jr. rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries at Indiana State, averaging 7.9 yards per touch.

Alonzo Booth scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the season against the Sycamores.  He leads the conference in that category.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
-  Presbyterian College has opened the season with losses to Mercer (45-7) and Jacksonville (30-20), both of which were at home.

-  The Blue Hose are averaging 13.5 points per game, 131 rushing yards per game and 122 passing yards per contest.

-  The PC defense is allowing 432 yards per game, including 242 rushing yards, and has not yet recorded a sack.

-  Jarius Jeter leads the team with 138 rushing yards and is averaging six yards per carry.  Quarterbacks Brandon Thompson and Tyler Huff have both played in each of the first two games.  Thompson is 17-for-30 with one interception and 150 yards.  He is also second on the team with 76 rushing yards.  Huff is 12-for-22 with one interception and 94 yards.  He has the team's only passing touchdown.

-  The nickname "Blue Hose" began in the early 1900's, when sportswriters referred to the Presbyterian College athletic teams as the "Blue Stockings" because of the blue socks they wore.  Ben Hay Hammet's 1982 centennial history of PC noted that blue-stocking Presbyterians also referred to "Presbyterians with strong puritan leanings."  Today the name signifies fierce Scottish warriors.  This interpretation also reflects the college's Scottish heritage.
