CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team earned an important conference road victory over Eastern Illinois on Friday, shutting out the Panthers, 1-0, at Lakeside Field.
Redshirt sophomore
Sarah Owusu delivered the decisive blow four minutes into the game, receiving a pass from freshman
Ali Kirk and firing a low shot past EIU goalkeeper Sara Teteak for the game-winner.
It was Owusu's second goal of the season and Kirk's first career assist.
From there, the unyielding EKU defense took over, earning its second clean sheet in only three OVC games.
"Today was about gutting out a result on the road, getting another three points in conference and staying healthy going into our home stretch," head coach
Matt Cosinuke said. "We accomplished all three of those goals."
Junior goalkeeper
Billie Clark made six saves to record her second shutout of the season.
Senior
Marian Wolski and junior
Katie Shaffer played all 90 minutes of the victory for the Colonels.
Freshman
Audrey Anderson led all players in the game with four shots, all of which were on frame.
EKU has now shut out Eastern Illinois the last six seasons, outscoring the Panthers 10-0 during that span.
"We really battled well on the defensive end," Cosinuke added. "We had a lot of young players step up in new roles today and show poise and toughness. Our attacking play could have been better but we believe our best soccer is still ahead of us."
The Colonels will now return home for five consecutive home games, beginning with Austin Peay on Friday, October 4.
