Despite Fast Start, EKU Women's Basketball Drops Road Game At Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. –
The women's basketball team scored the first six points of the game and had a 12-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, but couldn't hold off a Murray State comeback in a 66-65 loss on Thursday.
 
Teri Goodlett and I'Liyah Green combined to give EKU (10-18, 4-13 OVC) a 6-0 lead.  A three-pointer by Goodlett and a basket from De'Ayra Davis put the Colonels in front 15-8.  Eastern scored the final seven points of the first quarter and had a 22-10 advantage at the first break.
 
Murray State (14-14, 7-10 OVC) scored the first seven points of the second quarter and began the frame with a 16-4 run.  A jumper from Ashley Hunter with 2:46 left in the period tied the game 26-26 for the Racers.  EKU had a one-point lead, 32-31, at halftime. 
 
The game remained close throughout the second half with neither team leading by more than four points.  The Colonels continued to lead by one, 47-46, at the end of the third quarter.
 
With the game tied at 60-60 in the fourth, Alexis Burpo hit a free throw with 2:30 to go and Raegan Blackburn made a three-pointer at the 1:41 mark to stretch the home team's lead to four again.  Catie Kaifes answered with a three-pointer to get within one and then a Bria Bass lay-up put Eastern in front by one, 65-64, with 22 seconds to play.  Burpo connected on a lay-up at the other end with 10 seconds remaining to put the Racers up one.
 
Eastern missed a pair of shots in the final four seconds.
 
Goodlett led EKU with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, including 4-of-7 from long range.  Bass finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Kaifes added 13 points and six boards.
 
Burpo led all players with 21 points for Murray State.  The Racers shot 46 percent from the field and went 6-for-9 from three-point distance.  Eastern Kentucky out-rebounded MSU 38-31, but shot 39 percent.
                                                                                                                         
The Colonels will wrap up the 2019-20 season at home on Saturday against in-state rival Morehead State.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
