Each Sunday we are highlighting a different team or individual stat from EKUSports history.
Â
This week we examine a single number that in itself defines dominance – 33.
Â

The Eastern Kentucky University women's cross country program has won 33 Ohio Valley Conference Championships. Sounds like a lot, but is it?
Â
Yes, it is.
Â
Especially when you consider this. All other OVC teams – both past and present – have combined to win eight conference titles.
Â
Yes, you read that right. EKU 33, OVC 8!!
Â
The Colonels didn't even win any of the first three OVC Cross Country Championships, which began in 1979. Eastern let in-state rivals Morehead State (1979) and Murray State (1980 and 1981) have the first three trophies.Â
Â
EKU then won 18 straight!
Â
Morehead State rebounded from 20-plus years of being shut out by winning the 2000 crown. Eastern Illinois captured the first of its two titles in 2001. The Colonels then took their total to 20 by winning in 2002 and 2003.
Â
Former OVC member Samford won two in a row in 2004 and 2005.
Â
Starting in 2006, the only conference team not named "Eastern Kentucky" to win a women's cross country championship was Eastern Illinois in 2011.
Â
The Colonels current streak is at eight in a row. Just 10 more to match our streak of 18 straight from 1982 through 1999.
