RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team will look to carry over the success from last season's NCAA Tournament appearance to the 2022 season when the Colonels open at the inaugural Northern Lights/Southern Nights Invitational in Leesburg, Florida.
Â
EKU will take on five power-five schools including two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago.
Â
The Colonels will open with SEC foe Missouri on Feb. 11. The Tigers finished last year 42-17 before falling in game three of the super regional. EKU then takes on Wisconsin in its second game of the day. The Badgers finished last year 18-22 in a Big Ten only schedule.
Â
Eastern Kentucky takes on fellow Big Ten opponents Michigan State and Iowa on Feb. 12. The Spartans finished last year 14-26. Iowa went 26-18 and finished 99th in the RPI with one top-25 win.
Â
The Colonels wrap up the event on Feb. 13 against Northwestern out of the Big Ten. Northwestern finished last year 30-17 before falling to nationally ranked Kentucky twice in the Lexington Regional. The Wildcats finished last year ranked 50th in the RPI.
Â
Other teams in the event are Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty and UConn.
Â
The event should be particularly attractive to fans of softball, whether they drive in for the day from central Florida or fly in for the weekend from regional areas. Fans will have the excitement that comes when they can move from field to field, when one or more highly competitive games are continually happening. For fans who would like to come early or stay late, central Florida has numerous vacation attractions: Disney World and Universal Studios, art galleries and museums, lakes, hiking, and other nature activities.
