RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University volleyball team fell in five-sets to Belmont University Monday night at McBrayer Arena.
 
The Bruins won by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 25-15, 16-25 and 16-14.
 
In set five, the Colonels rushed out to an early 8-4 lead after a 
Molly Michalak kill. Belmont answered back with three-straight points to cut the Colonel lead to one, 8-7, after a Sophia Hagstom ace. Eastern responded and pushed its lead back out to three, 11-8, after another Michalak kill. After a 
Sarah Mitchell kill gave Eastern match point, the Bruins scored the final three points after back-to-back kills by Kristen Clemons to take the set and the match.
 
In set one the Colonels got off to a quick start and jumped out to an early 5-1 lead after a 
Jovana Bulatovic kill. Belmont quickly responded and the set was tied at 16-16 after an EKU error. After an 
Audrey Eurton ace cut the Bruin lead to, 21-20, the Bruins scored four of the last five points to take the opening set, 25-21.
 
The Bruins took the early lead and led for most of the second set. Belmont took a 19-15 lead after a Mackenzie LePage kill forced an Eastern timeout. Belmont held a four-point lead at 23-19 and that is when the Colonels made their run. Eastern went on a 4-0 run after a Bulatovic kill to tie the set at 23-23. Belmont took a 24-23 lead, but the Colonels scored the final three points to take the second set, 26-24.
 
In set three, Belmont jumped out to an early 10-2 lead over Eastern and never looked back. The Bruins cruised in the set, 25-15.
 
Eastern returned the favor in set four taking control halfway through the set after a 
Maddy Campbell ace made it 18-12. The Colonels scored the final three points of the set to take the fourth set, 25-16, and tie the match at 2-2.
 
Michalak led the way for the Colonels with a match-best 18 kills and 17 digs. Bulatovic had 15 kills and 
Sarah Mitchell chipped in 10. Eurton finished with a match-high 50 assists.
 
Eastern continues its homestand next Sunday when the Colonels welcome in SIU Edwardsville to McBrayer Arena. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
