RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky lost to Southern Illinois Edwardsville, 3-0, on Sunday at McBrayer Arena.
In the first set, SIUE used a 6-1 run to turn an 11-11 tie into a 17-12 lead. The Cougars had three kills and an ace during the run. A kill by Sydney Hummert finished off the spurt. Eastern never got closer than four the rest of the set. A kill by Savannah Christian ended the set 25-17 in favor of the visitors.
The Cougars (5-4, 5-4 OVC) scored the first four points, and seven of the first eight, in the second set and led wire-to-wire. Hummert's kill made it 7-1. Back-to-back kills by Rachel McDonald and Hope Everett handed the set to SIUE by a score of 25-18.
Eastern Kentucky (2-7, 2-7 OVC) scored the first point of the third set and led for much of the first half. A kill by
Jovana Bulatovic capped a 6-1 run that put the Colonels on top 16-12. However, the Cougars scored five of the next six to tie it 17-17 and keep EKU from pulling away. Neither team led by more than one until SIU Edwardsville scored three straight and edged in front 21-19 on a kill by McDonald. A service error by Eastern ended the set and the match, 25-22.
Bulatovic led EKU with 10 kills.
Sydney Schoen had 13 digs.
Hummert led all players with 14 kills for the Cougars. Christian added 10. SIUE hit .333 as a team while holding the Colonels to .140.
The two teams will face each other again on Monday at McBrayer Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
