EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Eastern Kentucky overcame a 5-0 deficit and took a 9-6 lead, but couldn't hold off a comeback by Southern Illinois Edwardsville in an 11-9 loss on Friday.

After the Cougars scored five runs and made just one out in the bottom of the first inning,
Jacob Abbott came on to pitch and immediately got a double play ball to end the inning. He then set up the EKU comeback by allowing just one run over the next six innings.
The Colonels scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to get within one, 5-4.
Caleb Upshaw hit a three-run home run over the wall in left center in the fifth inning for his third home run in the last three games.
Trailing 6-4 in the top of the sixth, Eastern tied the game on a two-run home run by
Brent Lovell that sailed out over the left field wall. The visitors took the lead on a RBI double by
Charlie Ludwick in the seventh, and then went in front by three when
Will King scored on an error and
Kendal Ewell drove in a run in the eighth.
Abbott got the team through seven innings with the lead before handing the ball over to the bull pen for the final two innings. He allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out five over six and two-thirds innings.
SIUE immediately got to freshman
Bryce Travis in the bottom of the eighth. A double and a single to start the frame put runners at the corners before a strike out. Two more singles brought home two more runs and cut the Eastern Kentucky (8-13, 3-4 OVC) lead to one, 9-8. Closer
Will Brian came in to try and put out the fire. He got a pop foul for the second out of the inning. One strike from getting out of the inning with the lead, Brett Johnson doubled down the left field line to score two and put the Cougars in front 10-9.
Upshaw finished the night 2-for-5 with a run and three RBIs.
Daniel Harris IV went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. He singled in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but the rally attempt ended there.
Johnson had a 3-for-4 day with two runs and two RBIs for SIU Edwardsville (9-9, 3-4 OVC).
