Colonels Drop Season Finale To North Dakota State

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky pitchers tossed a no-hitter through four innings, but North Dakota State earned a 6-1 win on Saturday at Earle Combs Stadium.

EKU seniors Jacob Abbott, Jaxson Blair, Chance Bodine, Brennan Kelly and Nick Laster were honored before the game.  All five played in their final contest as Colonels.

North Dakota State (38-16) grabbed an early lead when Jake Malec and Bennett Hostetler each scored on wild pitches in the first inning.  The Bison drew four walks in the inning and did not have a hit.  NDSU scored again in the second without registering a hit.  Jack Simonsen led off the inning with a walk.  He advanced to second and then third on two wild pitches, and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Eastern got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Logan Thomason that plated Charlie Ludwick.

EKU freshman Garret Simpson pitched five innings of relief, tying his career longest outing.  He allowed one run on three hits, walked one and struck out three.  Ludwick went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Abbott came on to pitch for the Colonels in the eighth and in doing so set a new program record for appearances in a season with his 33rd.  The previous mark of 32 was set by Robert Teague in 1991.

Zach Solano had a 2-for-4 day with a run and an RBI for North Dakota State.  Three Bison relievers combined to pitch the final four and one-third innings without allowing a run and giving up just wo hits.

The Colonels conclude the 2021 season with a 21-32 record.
