HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team fell to in-state rival Northern Kentucky University, 2-1, on a golden goal in the 95th minute on Sunday night. Â

The Colonels got off to a quick start in the first half when freshman
Nerea de Diego found the back of the net in the 12th minute to take an early 1-0 lead.

That was de Diego's first collegiate goal.

The lead held true for the first half as the EKU defense held NKU to only two shots, zero on goal in the first half.

Northern Kentucky answered back in the 71st minute.

The Norse played a ball into the box, after it bounced around Sofia Wilmes found it and put it in the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

EKU's defense held strong for the rest of the second half fighting off an aggressive NKU attack to send the match into extra time tied.

NKU struck early in the first OT period after Chloe Mills played a ball into the box off a corner kick and Morgan Jewell used her head to find the back of the net to win the match.

Northern Kentucky out-shot the Colonels 13-9 on the contest. NKU had five shots on goal compared to three for the Colonels.

EKU returns to the pitch on Friday when the Colonels travel to take on Horizon League preseason favorite Milwaukee at 8 p.m.
