EKU Beats Jacksonville In First-Ever ASUN Volleyball Match

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
In its first-ever ASUN Conference volleyball match, Eastern Kentucky beat Jacksonville, 3-0, on Friday in Nashville.
 
Berea, Kentucky native Sarah Mitchell had a match-best 13 kills, made only two errors and posted a .478 attack percentage.  She also had 17 digs and three assists.
 
The Colonels (4-10, 1-0 ASUN) scored the first four points of the first set.  Jacksonville climbed to within one, 8-7, before Eastern Kentucky put the set away with a 14-2 run to go in front 22-9.  EKU went on to win the first set 25-14.
 
In the second set, the Dolphins took a late 21-19 lead on a kill by Autumn DeSantis.  However, EKU scored the next five points to reach set-point at 24-21 on a kill from Anna Purichia.  Mitchell's kill moments later ended it, 25-23, and staked Eastern Kentucky to a 2-0 lead.
 
Jacksonville (3-10, 0-1 ASUN) scored the first point of the third set, but EKU scored the next three and never trailed again.  Audrey Eurton, playing in her first match of the season, scored the match-winning kill to cap it 25-20.
 
Eastern Kentucky had three fewer kills than the Dolphins, but Jacksonville committed 11 more attack errors than the Colonels.  EKU held a .183 to .077 edge in attack percentage.  Eastern Kentucky also had a 7-5 edge in aces and a 7-6 advantage in blocks.
 
Mikayla Logan had three kills, no errors and three blocks.  Taylor Grinley led the team with 19 assists to go along with eight digs.
 
Isa Dostal had a team-high 10 kills for Jacksonville.
 
The Colonels will face Liberty on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday at 1 p.m.  All three matches this weekend are being hosted by ASUN member Lipscomb.
