NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky ended the first weekend of ASUN Conference volleyball with a 3-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday in Nashville.

After falling behind 23-14 in the first set, the Colonels staged a furious comeback bid. EKU went on a 7-1 run to get within three.Â
Reilly Lowe got it started with a kill. Kills by
Anna Purichia and
Sarah Mitchell capped it off and made it 24-21. However, FGCU (11-4, 3-0 ASUN) scored the next point to win the set.

Trailing 2-0 in the match, Eastern Kentucky jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set. A kill by Mitchell kept the Colonels ahead by four, 17-13. The Eagles battled back and tied it 21-21 on a kill from Erin Shomaker. With the set tied again, 23-23, Shomaker gave Florida Gulf Coast match point with another kill. FGCU won it on the next series.

Purichia finished with a team-high eight kills for the Colonels (4-12, 1-2 ASUN) to go along with a .250 attack percentage, three digs and two blocks. Mitchell contributed six kills, six digs and four blocks. Lowe had five blocks.

Shomaker posted a match-best 13 kills, with just one error and a .545 attack percentage.

After playing seven straight matches away from home, the Colonels will return to McBrayer Arena on Friday to host Jacksonville State at 3 p.m. EKU will host North Alabama for a Homecoming match on Saturday at 1 p.m.
