First Half Explosion Powers EKU Over Austin Peay

Ream, Lemery Led the Colonels to Victory

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – EKU soccer displayed a dominant first half on Sunday afternoon at the Morgan Brothers Soccer Field, leading the Colonels to a 3-2 victory over old conference rival Austin Peay.

With the win, the Colonels move to 2-1-2 in the ASUN Conference, 6-3-2 on the season. Austin Peay drops to 3-6-4 and 1-3-1 in conference play.

"This entire weekend has been about discovering who we are as a program. Learning to win on the road, learning to handle the emotional ups and downs of momentum, learning to put games to bed more easily, we got a little bit of it all this trip," said head coach Matt Cosinuke. "We started hot today and probably could have had one or two more goals. I was really impressed with our attacking transition in the first half and our service on our set pieces. We have to continue to develop our situational composure and ability to make games easier on ourselves. We are excited to watch film, get back to training and prove what we are made of this coming week."

Senior Maddy Lemery was the highlight of the match, her two first-half goals tied the EKU program record for goals scored in a single game. Gretta Gunn also tied her single game career-high value assisting two of EKU's three goals.

The Colonels wasted no time getting started in today's affair after being awarded their first corner kick of the match in the first minute. Gunn placed a ball from the right angle that found the jumping head of Lucy Ream to get EKU on the board. The mark was the second time this season that EKU has scored in or before the opening minute of regulation.

Six minutes later, Lemery notched her first goal using her left boot after sneaking past two Austin Peay defenders to strike the right side of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

EKU continued their offensive dominance well after the two-goal lead, Lemery hit a ball three feet into the APSU box that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and over the line for her second goal of the match.

Despite the three-goal Colonel lead, Austin Peay went into the halftime break with the advantage in shots (10-8).

The Governors changed formations after the break and flipped the pressure onto the Colonels to open the second half, grabbing their first goal in the 49th minute from a goal by Alec Baumgardt.

Over the next 30 minutes of play, Austin Peay attempted six of seven shots in the match, one that was saved by EKU keeper Lauren Seedlock.

APSU tacked on another goal in the 81st as midfielder Annabel Anderson dribbled a ball from the midline and used her right to bring the Govs within one.

Ream saved the match in the 87th minute, blocking a shot in the box from the APSU forward that bounced into Seedlock's gloves to give EKU its second conference win in five matches.

Today's win marked the first win over APSU since the 2015 season and the first win in series history in Clarksville, renewing an old Ohio Valley Conference rivalry and bringing it to the ASUN.

Kara Haas and Rylie Jucker made their first start on the season in Sunday's win. Seedlock ended the match with seven saves, tying her season-high.

The Colonels wrapped up a three-match road swing after the win over APSU. EKU will return to Richmond to face Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson next week at the EKU Soccer Field.
