RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky started strong and finished strong in a 3-0 victory over visiting North Florida at home on Friday.
The Colonels won by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-16.
EKU will host Jacksonville on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday will be Youth Sports, Halloween Fun and Fan Appreciation Day. All fans will receive FREE admission. Candy stations will be set up for kids on the concourse as part of Halloween festivities.
Junior
Molly Michalak led Eastern Kentucky (13-12, 4-7 ASUN) with 12 kills. She committed just one error and hit .379 while recording 12 digs.
Carson Ledford had seven kills, hit .312 and totaled four blocks.
Josie Schmitendorf led the team with 14 digs and
Chloe Mason added a team-best 20 assists.
North Florida (8-14, 6-5 ASUN) was led by Solimar Cestero with 14 kills.
EKU committed 12 fewer errors, 25-13, and out-hit the Ospreys .248 to .110. The Colonels had seven blocks compared to six for UNF.
Eastern Kentucky broke a 5-5 tie in the first set with a 6-1 run to seize control. Five of the six points came on North Florida attack errors, two straight of which gave the Colonels an 11-6 edge. A kill from
Maddy Campbell made it a six-point margin at 20-14. A kill from Ledford followed by another UNF error and finished the set, 25-18.
The second set was close throughout. After Cestero gave the Ospreys a 23-22 lead, a UNF service error tied the score for the 11th time in the set. A North Florida attack error gave Eastern Kentucky set-point. On the ensuing serve, Schmitendorf found a bit of luck when her serve clipped the net, traveled two feet to the right along the top of the net and then fell in the upper left corner for an ace.
In the third set, the Colonels took control early. With the score tied 4-4, EKU rolled off a 6-2 run to go up four, 10-6, after a kill from Michalak. Three straight points, including back-to-back aces by
Miya Carmichael, pushed the lead to six, 16-10. Another Michalak kill made it 20-13. Her final kill gave Eastern Kentucky match-point at 24-16. On the next series, Ledford recorded a kill to end it.
