Cross Country Men Win Their First ASUN Championship, Women Earn A Bronze Medal

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Eastern Kentucky cross country teams ran at the ASUN Cross Country Championships on Saturday at John Hunt Park. The men dominated in the 8K race with 18 points as they won their first ASUN championship while the women finished in third place in the 5K race with 102 points, earning a bronze medal.
 
Graduate student Ahmed Jaziri won the individual men's conference title for the third consecutive year (1 OVC, 2 ASUN), earning the ASUN Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year. The All-American posted a career-best 8K time of 23:22.40. Senior Nikodem Dworczak was the runner-up in the 8K race clocking a personal-best time of 23:24.80. Senior Hakim Abouzouhir delivered a stellar race, as he ran a personal-best 8K time of 23:35.40 finishing in fourth place out of 116 runners. Seniors Jackson Siddall (5th / 23:37.30) and Keeton Thornsberry (6th / 23:41.80) rounded out the Colonels' scoring five at the meet. Abouzouhir, Dworczak, Jaziri, Siddall, and Thornsberry earned All-ASUN First Team honors for their performances.
 
Graduate student Joan Tapias clocked a career-best 8K time of 23:48.30 finishing in ninth place while senior Enock Kipchumba followed Tapias posting an 8K time of 23:52.20. Sophomore Nicodemus Rotich claimed 11th place ran a personal-best 8K time of 23:52.90. Kipchumba, Rotich, and Tapias earned All-ASUN Second Team honors for their performances.
 
Sophomore Ahmed Kadri clocked a personal-best 8K time of 24:13.40 finishing in 19th place, earning himself All-ASUN Third Team honors.
 
The Liberty men finished in second place with 73 points, followed by Lipscomb (102).
 
The EKU women were led by graduate student Jone Zabaleta Larranaga posting a 5K time of 16:45.40 finishing in fourth place out of 115 competitors. Senior Anouk Van Gils ran a career-best 5K time of 17:06.50 finishing in 13th place while senior Grace Kilroy claimed 16th place clocking a personal-best 8K time of 17:24.10. Zabaleta Larranaga earned All-ASUN First Team honors while Van Gils got All-ASUN Second Team honors, and Kilroy earned All-ASUN Third Team honors.
 
Senior Christina DiFalco (27th / 17:44.90) and graduate Saskia Pingpank (47th / 18:08.20) rounded out the scoring for the Maroon and White. Senior Katy Chapman clocked a 5K time of 18:15.50 finishing in 52nd place while freshman Irene Rubio Miralles claimed 63rd place posting a 5K time of 18:28.70. Graduate student Alicia Recio ran a career-best 5K time of 20:19.20 finishing in 105th place.
 
The Lipscomb women won the conference title with 35 points, followed by Liberty (45).
 
The Colonels have an off weekend before traveling back to Louisville to compete in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 11 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
