Women’s Hoops Claims 50th Anniversary Battle Over Morehead State

Mari Walker Records Third Double-Double

RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky women's basketball (2-1) outscored Morehead State (0-3) by a score of 64-55 on Sunday night inside Baptist Health Arena, claiming the 50th anniversary battle between the two programs dating back to 1972.
 
Alice Recanati led the Colonels with 14 points on 5-of-9 (.555) shooting from the floor and added three assists. Emma Hacker dropped 12 points for the second time this season going 2-for-2 beyond the arch and sinking four free throws.
 
Antwainette Walker recorded her third straight double-double going for 11 points and 10 rebounds, heading into Sunday's contest Walker was one of 17 players in the country to record a double-double through the first two games of the season.
 
Eastern Kentucky opened tonight's contest with a 12-4 run at the hands of scoring efforts from five different student-athletes. The Colonels held Morehead State to one point in the final five minutes, only allowing the Eagles to five points in the first quarter.
 
Out of the first frame, Morehead State stopped its scoring drought and went on a 13-6 run heading to the second quarter media timeout. Hacker started the EKU swing with an and-one make to push the Colonels lead to seven at 25-18. Recanati scored a layup on back-to-back-to-back possessions to send the home team to the locker room up 33-20.
 
The Eagles clawed their way back in the third quarter shooting 4-of-9 (.444) from the floor, 2-of-4 (.500) from the 3-point line, and 5-of-6 (.833) from the charity stripe to bring the deficit to 11 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Ally Collett and Hacker knocked down crucial threes with six minutes left in the final frame to keep Morehead state at a double-digit length away. With 14 seconds left in the contest, Walker was gifted a ball in the paint from Ariel Kirkwood to record her double-double and place the game out of reach for MSU.
 
With the win, Eastern Kentucky moves to 57-46 all-time against Morehead State and has won the last six games in the series.
 
EKU went 21-of-32 (.656) from the charity stripe against MSU, through three games the Colonels have attempted 84 free throws for a top-50 value in the country.
 
The Colonels return to action next week in the highly anticipated MAAC/ASUN Dublin Basketball Challenge in Ireland with games against Marist (Friday, Nov. 18) on nationally televised ESPNU at 7:30 a.m. ET and Rider (Saturday, Nov. 19) at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
