EKU Drops Five-Setter At Stetson

Box Score

DELAND, Fla. –
The Colonels overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead, but couldn't hold off Stetson in a 3-2 loss on the road on Saturday.

The Hatters (15-11, 6-8 ASUN) won by scores of 25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21 and 15-12.

Molly Michalak had a match-best 19 kills for the Colonels (14-14, 5-9 ASUN).  She also had 21 digs and two aces.  Sarah Mitchell added 14 kills and AG Vandagriff contributed 12 kills.  Josie Schmitendorf totaled 20 digs.  Carson Ledford had eight blocks to go along with eight kills.

Anabelle Standish and Elena Djokovic led Stetson with 16 kills each.

EKU trailed 18-13 in the first set after an attack error.  However, the Colonels didn't fold.  A 6-0 run turned that five-point deficit into a one-point lead.  Michalak's kill made it 19-18 in favor of the visitors.  With the scored tied 22-22, the Hatters scored three straight to take the opener.

Eastern Kentucky scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed.  Kills from Mitchell and Katie McKune made it 12-5.  Stetson got within two on three occasions, but never any closer.  Ledford's kill ended the set and tied the match.

The Colonels scored the first five points of the third set, but had to stage a comeback to take the 2-1 lead.  Michalak's kill made it 5-0.  Back-to-back EKU attack errors put Stetson ahead 8-7.  Standish's kill put the Hatters on top by four, 13-9.  Eastern Kentucky scored five straight and led 14-13 after an error by Standish.  With the set tied 16-16, a Stetson service error gave the Colonels a lead they would never relinquish.  Maddy Campbell's kill made it 20-16.  Katie McKune ended the set with a kill.

Stetson jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set.  The Hatters went up 11-5 on a kill from Standish.  EKU battled back and got as close as one, 17-16, on a kill from Michalak.  Stetson scored the next four and took the set 25-21.

Neither team led in the fifth set by more than two until an Eastern Kentucky attack error put Stetson ahead 14-11.  Michalak had a kill on the next series before the Hatters closed out the set, 15-12, and the match.

The Colonels will return to action on Friday at Liberty.  The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
