RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team will open the 2022 season at the Northern Lights/Southern Nights Invitational in Leesburg, Florida.

The Colonels play two games on Friday, two games on Saturday, and one game on Sunday morning.

First pitch against Iowa on Friday is scheduled for 10 a.m. The Colonels turn around to take on Wisconsin at 1 p.m. on Friday. EKU takes on Pittsburgh at 11 a.m. and Penn State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Colonels wrap up the weekend against No. 23 Northwestern on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

Inside the Series                                                          Â
-Iowa finished 26-18 last year in a Big Ten only schedule. The Hawkeyes finished 99th in the RPI a year ago with one win over the top-25. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2003. Iowa leads the all-time series, 2-1.

-Wisconsin went 18-22 last year in the Big Ten only schedule. The Badgers finished 152 in the RPI last year. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 2013. Wisconsin leads the all-time series between the two squads, 2-1.

-Pittsburgh finished last year with a 17-29 record out of the ACC. The Panthers finished with two top-25 wins last year. This is the first meeting between the two squads since 2012. Pittsburgh leads the all-time series, 1-0.

-Penn State went 7-34 in a Big Ten only schedule last year. The Nittany Lions posted one win over a top-25 Minnesota team during the year. The two teams haven't met on the diamond since 2005. This will be the third game all-time between the two teams. The first two were split.

-The Colonels wrap up the weekend against No. 23 Northwestern. The Wildcats finished last year 30-17 before falling to Kentucky in the Lexington Regional. Northwestern finished last year ranked 50th in the RPI. This will be the first ever meeting between the two squads.

What EKU Brings:
-EKU finished last year 35-17 and is coming off its first NCAA Regional appearance since 2004. The Colonels knocked off Austin Peay and first-place Southeast Missouri State twice in as many days to win the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.

Sammi Miller returns for a squad that returns 6-of-9 starters off last year's regional appearance team. Miller led the team last year, hitting .400, with 13 doubles, three triples, five home runs, and 24 RBIs. Miller was named Preseason All-ASUN.

-The Colonels return three pitchers off last year's squad.
Samantha Reynoso is the lead returner. The senior posted a 6-3 record last year and was named OVC Tournament MVP.

Carly Robinson returns in the middle of the order for the Colonels. The senior hit .318 last year with seven double, and team-highs with nine home runs and 40 RBIs.

-The Colonels finished last year ranked 51st in the country in doubles and 66th in the country in home runs per game.

-EKU finished last year ranked 62nd in the RPI. Â
