EKU Softball Splits A Pair Of Contests Against Buffalo And Valpo On Day Two Of The Bluegrass Classic

Game 1 | Game 2

LEXINGTON, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky University softball team split a pair of contests on day two of the Bluegrass Classic at John Cropp Stadium.

EKU fell in game one to Buffalo, 5-4, before knocking off Valpo in game two, 4-1.

The Colonels wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first against Valpo in game two.

With two runners on, Jasmine Miller hit a ground ball to the shortstop who threw it away and Maggie Pertee came around to score to give Eastern Kentucky a lead they would never give up.

EKU struck for three more runs in the bottom of the second. Lou Bowers got the inning started with a single through the left side. After a ground out moved Bowers into scoring position, Samantha Reynoso doubled to left center to bring home Bowers and give the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases for the Colonels with one out. Pertee doubled off the left center field fence to score two more and give Eastern Kentucky a 4-0 advantage over Valpo.

Valparaiso got one back in the top of the third but could never get any closer.

Pertee went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs on the contest. Bowers went 2-for-3 with a double. Miller and Reynoso each had a hit.

Freshman Lauren Narvaez picked up her first career win in the circle tossing a complete game allowing one run on four hits.

In game one of the day Buffalo took the early lead and held off the Colonels late in the game.

The Bulls scored two in the bottom of the first inning without recording a hit against Colonel pitching.

EKU answered back in the top of the second with a solo home run from Jasmine Miller to center field to cut into the lead, 2-1.

Buffalo pushed its lead back to two with a run in the bottom half of the second inning after a runner came across on a wild pitch.

The Colonels quickly answered in the top of the third. Amanda Sjoberg got things started with a single up the middle and stole second base. Sammi Miller followed with a single the other way to put runners on the corners with no one out. A double steal led Sjoebrg scoring and cutting into the Bulls lead, 3-2.

Buffalo extended its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs to take a 5-2 lead over the Colonels after five full innings.

EKU didn't go away in the sixth. Ariyana Miranda walked, and Maggie Pertee singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with no one out. With one out, Miller worked a walk to load the bases for the Colonels. Back-to-back singles from Miranda Lopez and Sjoberg pushed two runs across to cut the Bulls lead to one, 6-5, but a double play ended the EKU threat in the top of the sixth.

The Colonels had 10 hits on the contest. Miller and Sjoberg each had two hits on the contest.

Narvaez pitched four and one-third innings in relief allowing two runs and striking out four.

EKU wraps up the Bluegrass Classic on Sunday against Indiana University on Sunday at Louisville. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
