EKU Softball's Comeback Comes Up Short Against Indiana

Box Score

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
The Eastern Kentucky University softball team's comeback came up short against Indiana University, 7-6, on the final day of the Bluegrass Classic at the University of Louisville.

The leadoff batter for the Hoosiers reached via a walk. Cora Bassett stole second to get in scoring position and later came around to score on a wild pitch to give Indiana the early lead, 1-0.

Indiana added two runs in the top of the second to extend its lead over the Colonels, 3-0, after one and half innings.

EKU started chipping away after that.

Maggie Pertee got things started in the bottom of the second with a double off the base of the wall. Ariyana Miranda followed suit with a double over the right fielders' head to score Pertee and cut into the Hoosiers lead, 3-1.

Amanda Sjoberg scored in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch to cut the Indiana lead to one, 3-2.

The Hoosiers responded with four runs of their own on five hits in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 lead over Eastern Kentucky.

Again, the Colonels started chipping away. Lou Bowers doubled to right center to lead off the inning. Carly Robinson brought home Jeanay Riley from second base on a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the lead to 7-3.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth Miranda reached after a hit by pitch. Jasmine Miller took the first pitch she saw over the left center field fence for a two-run home run and cut the Indiana lead to two, 7-5. The Colonels answered again with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Three straight singles from the top of the order cut the Hoosier lead one, 7-6.

EKU had the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't push anything across.

Miller went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Eight different Colonels recorded a hit on the day,

Lauren Narvaez tossed four shutout innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out two.

EKU's home opener on Tuesday against Dayton has been canceled.
