Colonels' Comeback Comes Up Short In Series Opener

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky cut an eight-run deficit to one, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 13-9 loss to Central Arkansas in the opener of a 3-game series at Earle Combs Stadium on Thursday.

The Bears were up 2-1 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning.  UCA took advantage of four walks and two hit batters to fuel the big frame and go on top 7-1.  Two of the walks and one of the hit batters came with the bases loaded.

Connor Emmet hit his second home run of the game, a 2-run shot, in the top of the sixth, to extend the visitors' lead to eight, 9-1.

EKU whittled away at the deficit in the sixth, seventh and eighth.  Sebastian Greico hit a grand slam with two outs in the sixth, his third home run of the season.  Max Williams sent a solo shot over the wall in right center in the seventh to make it a 3-run game, 9-6.  Charlie Ludwick's 2-out single scored Kendal Ewell and made it a 2-run game.

Emmet's third home run of the game came in the eighth and extended it back to a 3-run lead, 10-7.  He finished 4-for-5 with five runs and six RBIs.

The Colonels came right back and scored twice in the bottom of the inning to get within one.  Ewell singled with two outs to score Greico.  Logan Thomason followed with a double to left to plate Jalen Jones.  That's as close as it would get.

Greico finished 1-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs.  Jones had a 2-for-4 game with a walk, two runs and an RBI.  Ewell scored twice, had three hits and drove in a run.

The two teams combined for seven home runs.  Eastern Kentucky walked 10 and hit four batters.

Central Arkansas jumped out ahead in the first with back-to-back solo home runs by Emmet and Hunter Hicks.  Eastern Kentucky's first run came in the bottom of the third when Jones hit his first home run of the season.

Game two of the series is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, which is Bark In The Park night.  Bring your dog out to the stadium and receive a free dog bandana.

There will be an Easter Egg Hunt on the field after Saturday's series finale.  The Lexington Legends will play the Wild Health Genomes at Earle Combs at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
