RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University softball team knocked off Bellarmine University, 9-4, on Sunday to secure the sweep over the Knights.

Bellarmine got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back singles got things started for the Knights and put runners on first and third with no one out. Anna Greenwell brought home the first run of the game for the Knights with an RBI groundout to shortstop.

The Colonels answered back in the top of the fourth and never gave up the lead after that.

Jeanay Riley walked on four straight pitches to get things started.
Maggie Pertee and
Jasmine Miller followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases with no one out.
Lou Bowers delivered a big blow taking the 0-2 pitch deep to dead center field for a grand slam to give the Colonels a 4-1 lead. Bellarmine quickly answered back in the bottom half of the fourth inning with three straight hits to score two runs and cut the Eastern Kentucky lead to one, 4-3.

EKU finally got some separation in the top of the fifth inning.
Samantha Reynoso led off the inning with a single up the middle After Reynoso stole second base, Riley doubled into the right center gap to score Reynoso and give the Colonels a 5-3 lead. With two outs,
Jasmine Miller doubled to left field to score Riley from second base and the Colonels doubled up Bellarmine, 6-3. Bowers worked a walk to put runners on first and second when
Vianna Barron singled up the middle to score Miller and give EKU the 7-3 advantage.

Bellarmine scored one in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Abby Shipley. Â

The Colonels added two more in the top of the seventh on a two RBI single by
Ariyana Miranda.

Kaitlyn Young picked up the win in the circle tossing three innings in relief, allowing one run, and striking out one.

Miller, Bowers, and Barron all had two hits on the contest.

EKU returns home for a midweek tilt against Miami (OH) on Wednesday night at Gertrude Hood Field. First-pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
