RICHMOND, Ky. – EKU women's basketball moves to 8-1 with a 30-point, 85-55 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday afternoon at Baptist Health Arena.
Antwainette Walker scored her 1,000th career point in the win.
The Colonels were led by Walker, who recorded a team-leading 21 points – her 35th consecutive game scoring in double figures for EKU. Walker added nine rebounds, six assists, three steals, and went 9-for-9 from the free throw line.
Following Walker's performance, guard
Brie Crittendon scored a career-high 19 points behind a 5-of-8 showing beyond the arch.
EKU's backcourt,
Ivy Turner (13) and
Alice Recanati (10), were the other two student-athletes in double figure scoring.
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor, standing 6-foot-3, earned her first career start for the maroon and white, dropping nine points on 3-of-4 shooting. The Omaha, Nebraska native added six rebounds in the contest.
EKU jumped out to a 12-8 run to open the first quarter off made jumpers from Walker, Turner, and made threes from Crittendon and Turner. Miami claimed a 13-12 lead, its only lead of the game, with 2:27 left in the quarter off a made free throw from Cincinnati transfer Jadyn Scott. Two additional EKU three-pointers from Turner and Crittendon closed the quarter in the Colonels' favor, 20-15.
Recanati made a floater with 3:57 in the second quarter to extend EKU's lead to 11 with 3:14 left in the first half. Crittendon's third made three and a basket by Walker ended the half with a 14-point, 41-27 advantage.
Miami's Scott scored the first basket in the second half, but failed to stop EKU's offensive prowess as the Colonels pushed their lead to over 25 after the media timeout. At 6:48 on the clock, Walker recorded her 1,000th career point from the free throw line. The Colonels would knock down two more three-pointers and three made layups to end the third quarter with a lopsided 68-41 lead.
The RedHawks scored three of the first four baskets in the final period of regulation, however, Crittendon's career-high five three pointers and another from
Althea Kara Angeles put Miami away as both teams arrived at the media TO. A
Bridgid Fox offensive rebounds and putback sealed the win for EKU, its eighth of the season and seventh straight win at home.
EKU outshot Miami 10-3 from beyond the arch and made 11 more free throws than the RedHawks. Both teams ended the contest shooting 42 percent from the floor.
For the sixth time in nine games, EKU outrebounded its opposition, claiming the 40-33 (+7) advantage over Miami.
EKU was +10 in assists for the fourth time this season.
The Colonels return to action on Sunday against Tennessee on the road at Food City Center at Thompson-Boiling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn. EKU is seeking its first win over the Lady Vols since 1976.
