RICHMOND, Ky. – Logan Thomason and
Charlie Ludwick hit home runs in the first inning to give Eastern Kentucky University a 3-2 lead, but the Colonels couldn't hold off UNC Asheville late in the game, falling 9-5.
UNC Asheville (5-2) broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Thomason finished 1-for-3 with two walks, a run and two RBIs. Ludwick was 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and two RBIs.
Miguel Larreal had a 2-for-3 day and scored a run.
Robbie Burnett went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs for the Bulldogs.
After UNCA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Colonels (4-4) answered in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Thomason hit a solo shot over the wall in right center.
Roderick Criss II followed with a single. Facing an 0-2 count, Ludwick hit a two run shot over the wall in left center.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the top of the third to take a 4-3 advantage. Thomason's ground ball in the bottom half of the third inning was enough to score
DJ Sullivan and tie the game.
Jalen Jones put EKU in front 5-4 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Burnett's solo home run in the sixth tied the game again for UNC Asheville.
The Colonels loaded the bases in the sixth and seventh innings but came away empty.
EKU will be back in action on Tuesday at No. 5 Louisville. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
