Colonels Sweep Doubleheader At North Alabama

Game 1 Box Score  |  Game 2 Box Score

FLORENCE, Ala. –
Eastern Kentucky University swept a doubleheader at North Alabama on Saturday, winning by scores of 12-2 and 5-3.

EKU (18-21, 8-9 ASUN) scored early and often in the first game of the doubleheader.  For the third time in the last five games, Logan Thomason hit a home run in the Colonels' first at bat of the game.  Charlie Ludwick added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead in the first.

After North Alabama scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, EKU put together a five-run second to begin to pull away.  Miguel Larreal and Will King each had an RBI single.  Ludwick was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the third run and Larreal came home on a wild pitch.  DJ Sullivan's ground ball to second base was enough to score King and give the Colonels a 7-1 lead.

Ludwick had a two-run single in the fourth and King had a run-scoring double in the sixth to push the advantage to 10-1.

Isaac Milburn started and cruised through the first five innings for the visitors.  The sacrifice fly in the first inning by the Lions started a string of 13 straight retired by the sophomore left-hander.  He struck out six of those 13.  UNA's first hit in the game didn't come until there were two outs in the fifth.  Milburn got the next batter out on a ground ball to end the inning.

Milburn (3-3) earned the win after striking out a career-best 11 in a career-high six and two-thirds innings.  He allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on two hits and walked three.

King was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.  Ludwick went 2-for-2 with a walk and five RBIs.  Thomason finished 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs and an RBI.

North Alabama (9-28, 3-14 ASUN) struck first in game two, pushing across two runs in the fourth on a bases loaded hit by pitch and a bases loaded walk.

The Colonels rallied in the seventh with the help of seven walks in the inning.  Santiago Peralta started the inning with a free pass, but was then put out on a fielder's choice.  Larreal followed with a walk and King's single loaded the bases.  Ludwick drew a walk to force in the first run of the game for EKU.

After a strikeout, Roderick Criss II and Jalen Jones reached on back-to-back walks to force in two more runs.  Ludwick scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.  Hayden Duffield and Peralta, for the second time in the inning, each walked.  Peralta's trot to first forced in Criss for a 5-2 Colonel lead.

EKU had only four hits in the game, but totaled 12 walks.  Larreal walked four times in the game.  Ludwick and Peralta drew two each.

Luke Reed started and struck out six in four and one-third innings.  He allowed two runs on two hits and six walks.  Nathan Lawson (2-1) picked up the win after tossing one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.  He struck out two and did not walk a batter.

The two teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
