FLORENCE, Ala. – Charlie Ludwick hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Eastern Kentucky University rolled to a 9-3 victory over North Alabama on Sunday to complete the weekend ASUN Conference series sweep.
EKU (19-21, 9-9 ASUN) won the first game of the series 12-2 in eight innings, and took the second game 5-3.
The Colonels wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Sunday. After a pop up to start the game,
Miguel Larreal and
Will King posted back-to-back singles. Ludwick followed with a three-run home run over the wall in right field.
Ludwick started the third inning with a walk and then scored later on a ground ball for a 4-0 EKU lead.
EKU pulled away with three runs in the fifth.
Santiago Peralta drew a bases loaded walk to score
DJ Sullivan. Larreal beat out a ground ball to first, allowing
Roderick Criss II to score. With the bases still loaded, King drew a walk to bring home
Hayden Duffield and make it a 7-0 game.
The Colonels drew 32 walks in the three-game series. EKU pitchers issued only 15.
Starter
Michael Schuler (2-1) pitched five shutout innings, allowed four hits and one walk while striking out a season-high eight. The senior right-hander hasn't allowed a run in his last 10 and one-third innings on the mound.
Larreal was 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI. King went 2-for-5 with a run and two driven in. Ludwick had three RBIs, scored twice and finished 1-for-5 with a walk.
Gehrig Frei hit a two-run home run in the eighth for North Alabama (9-29, 3-15 ASUN). Kyle Machado had two hits in four at bats, scored a run and drove in one.
The Colonels will play at Xavier on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
