Larreal's Grand Slam Propels Colonels To Series Clinching Win

Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –
With Eastern Kentucky University in front by one in the third, Miguel Larreal hit a grand slam to propel the Colonels to a 16-5 series clinching win at Queens on Saturday.

EKU (24-24, 12-11 ASUN) won the opening game of the series 15-0 in seven innings on Friday and will go for the sweep in the finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The Colonels have won three of their last four ASUN Conference series.

With runners at first and second and one out in the top of the third inning, Michael Goehrig broke a 3-3 tie with a single to right field.  After a strikeout, Logan Thomason drew a walk to load the bases.  Larreal then sent the first pitch he saw sailing over the wall down the right field line to turn a 4-3 game into an 8-3 advantage.

The Colonels loaded the bases again, with one out, in the fifth.  Will King delivered a two-run single to center field.  Charlie Ludwick followed with a walk to keep the bases juiced for DJ Sullivan.  The junior outfielder singled to center as well to bring in two more, cap a four-run inning and give EKU a 12-3 advantage.

Ron Franklin Jr. added a grand slam of his own in the eighth to stretch the margin to 16-5.  The game ended by run-rule after eight.

Larreal was 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs.  Sullivan had three hits in four at bats, walked once, scored twice and drove in two.  Franklin finished 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and four RBIs.

Luke Reed (2-2) started and scattered six hits over five innings while striking out a season-high seven batters.  Reed walked three and allowed three runs.

JJ Sousa had a 2-for-4 game with a run and two RBIs for Queens (12-34, 6-17 ASUN).
