RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team ended a two-match home stand with a 1-1 draw against Belmont on Thursday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field.
With Thursday's draw, the Colonels move to 0-2-1 through their first three matches of the season.
EKU's offensive output on the young season has been highlighted by freshmen
Erica Cox and
Ruby Dunlevy, who have netted the first two goals of the season for the Colonels. Cox, a Liberty Township, Ohio product, recorded her first collegiate goal on Thursday in the 32nd minute catching a through ball from
Maddy Murphy and placed the ball in the back of the net.
The Colonels attempted to pad their lead to two in the final seven minutes of the first frame by senior
Kaitlyn Andrews and Dunlevy. Dunlevy, who entered Thursday's match as the lone scorer of the season, tallied a career-high three shots in the draw.
Nearly 30 minutes after EKU scored the opening goal, Belmont found its equalizer in the 61st minute as Kennedy Wise converted the corner, catching passes from two teammates to head in the goal.
EKU outshot Belmont 6-1 in the final 25 minutes of regulation, however, failed to convert on any of its attempts to leave the score in a standstill in the 10th meeting between the old conference rivals.
EKU ended Thursday's match with a season-high 17 shots to Belmont's 11. The Colonels also edged the Bruins in corners (7-5).
EKU's keeper
Marah Krick ended the match with a season-high five saves. Her five saves in Thursday's match were her highest amount of saves since Sept. 23, 2021 against Florida Gulf Coast.
The Colonels continue non-conference play next Thursday as the team travels to Chicago to face DePaul.
