Colonels Complete Road Sweep, Move To 4-0 In The ASUN With Win At North Alabama

Box Score

FLORENCE, Ala. –
Eastern Kentucky University completed a two-game road sweep with an 81-72 victory at North Alabama on Saturday.  The Colonels are unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference play at 4-0.

EKU will return to Richmond to host in-state conference rival Bellarmine Saturday (Jan. 20) on First Responders Night.  Tip-off at Baptist Health Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

The Maroon & White started the trip with a victory at Central Arkansas on Thursday.

Michael Moreno scored a team-best 17 points, hitting 5-of-7 from 3-point range.  He also grabbed five rebounds.  Isaiah Cozart recorded his third straight double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three blocks and two steals.  Leland Walker contributed 15 points and six assists.  Devontae Blanton posted 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds.

The Colonels  (8-9, 4-0 ASUN) grabbed an early 13-5 lead, but the Lions righted the ship temporarily and closed the gap to two, 17-15, on a jumper from Jacari Lane with 12:59 to go in the first half.  EKU answered with a 16-4 run that changed the game.

Collin Cooper got it started with a 3-pointer.  Cozart and Montavious Myrick combined for four points each on the inside during the run.  Blanton's jumper in the lane capped it off and put the visitors in front by 14, 33-19, 6:09 on the clock.

Six straight allowed the Lions to narrow it to seven, 38-31.  However, the Colonels scored seven of the final nine points of the half.  Tayshawn Comer's old-fashioned 3-point play with two minutes to go before intermission made it a 14-point game, 45-31.  UNA netted the final bucket of the half and went to the locker room down 12, 45-33.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Moreno, one from the right corner and another from the left corner, pushed EKU out in front by 18, 58-40, with 12:49 left in the game.  North Alabama started the second half 2-for-11 from the field.

The Lions made a late run, out-scoring the Colonels 11-2 and drawing within six on a leaning 3-pointer from Tim Smith Jr. with 1:49 on the clock.  UNA never got any closer.

Lane led all players with 19 points for North Alabama (7-10, 1-2 ASUN).

The Colonels shot 43 percent from the field and 47 percent (8-for-17) from behind the 3-point arc.  EKU held UNA to 37 percent shooting.  The Colonels have limited all four of their conference opponents to less than 40 percent shooting.  The Lions made just 5-of-21 from deep (24 percent).
