RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior guard
Alice Recanati dished out four assists to surpass Angie Cox's 32-year-old EKU program record in career assists at 487, but the Colonels fell to Stetson by a score of 65-62 on Wednesday night inside Baptist Health Arena.
Recanati now sits atop the EKU career assists record with 491 career assists, in her last three seasons the Bergamo, Italy native has averaged over 4.4 assists per game. She holds both the program record in career assists and single season assists, with 166 assists in 32 games last season.
EKU (16-6, 5-3 ASUN) has its 10-game home and five game Atlantic Sun Conference winning streaks snapped in the loss.
Graduate
Antwainette Walker led all scorers with 16 points shooting 7-of-14 (.500) from the floor. Walker has scored 16 or more points in six of her last seven games.
On her historic night, Recanati totaled 11 points highlighted by a 2-of-2 clip from beyond the arch. She finished with a team-high six rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Guard
Ivy Turner followed suit with 14 points and four assists, her second straight game scoring in double figures.
EKU jumped out to a 19-2 run to open Wednesday's game off four made baskets from a Stetson turnover, the Colonels had three made three-pointers from Walker, Recanati, and
Kaitlyn Costner. Stetson would muster up one more made basket, but EKU countered to extend its lead to 22-4 at the end of one.
Walker hit her second, and last, three of the night to open the second quarter, pushing the EKU lead to 25-6. A made basket by
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor and a string of Colonel free throws would close the first half 37-22 in the home team's favor.
Stetson opened the second half hitting three of the first four baskets, narrowing its deficit to just 10 points, 41-31 at the under-five media timeout. The Hatters closed their gap to as little as seven points but ended the third down eight at 48-40.
The Hatters would score on their first two possessions of the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to one possession, 48-45. EKU's Turner turned an and-one, plus an additional basket to stop Stetson's advance. Despite EKU clinging on to its lead, Stetson went on a 10-point run to take a 57-56 lead after the media timeout. Six lead changes and two ties later, Stetson claimed the ASUN Women's Basketball Game of the Week by a 65-62 result.
Stetson overcame an 18-point deficit to secure the victory on Wednesday night, the Hatters out-shot EKU 47 to 37 percent from the floor.
EKU returns to action back in the Sunshine State facing defending conference champion and current ASUN leader, Florida Gulf Coast, on Saturday night at Alico Arena. EKU will be seeking its first win over FGCU as a member of the ASUN Conference.
