Colonels Sweep First-Place FGCU

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University's volleyball team handed first-place Florida Gulf Coast its first Atlantic Sun Conference loss of the season, beating the Eagles 3-0 on Sunday at the Rick Erdmann Olympic Sports Training Center.

FGCU (13-4, 5-1 ASUN) entered the match ranked No. 53 in the NCAA RPI and having won all five of its ASUN matches without losing a set.

The Colonels won by scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-16.

Carson Ledford led EKU (12-7, 3-3 ASUN) with 12 kills.  She did not commit an error in 16 attempts and posted a .750 attack percentage.  She also had two aces and one block.  Paige Wagers finished with six kills in seven attempts, a .714 hitting percentage and three blocks.  Emilee Hill contributed four kills with only one error, 10 digs and a match-best 23 assists.

The Colonels took the lead for good in the first set on a service error from FGCU.  EKU was on top by only one, 18-17, after committing an attack error, but a run of five straight changed the set, and the match.  Kills from Ledford and AG Vandagriff capped the run and put the home team up six, 23-17.  Vandagriff's kill moments later ended the first 25-19.

Vandagriff finished the match with nine kills.

EKU scored the first four points of the second set and never looked back.  With a 5-point advantage, 11-6, the Colonels rolled off six unanswered.  A kill from freshman Abney Cooper and a bad set by the Eagles pushed the lead to 17-6.  Sarah Mitchell's kill kept her squad out ahead by eight, 19-11.  Kambree Lucas ended the set, 25-20, with a kill.

The Colonels scored first in the third set and never trailed.  Florida Gulf Coast was within one, 14-13, on a kill from Shelby Kent, and down by only two at 17-15 after an EKU attack error.  Another big run allowed the Colonels to secure the match.  Ledford's kill pushed the margin to three and began a 7-0 run.  Mitchell gave the Colonels match-point at 24-15 with a kill.  After the visitors put an end to the run, Ledford finished off the match with a kill.

Kent had a match-high 22 kills for the Eagles.  She made only two errors in 42 attacks for a .476 hitting percentage.

EKU out-hit FGCU .371 to .192.  The Colonels had 48 kills compared to just 33 for the Eagles.  EKU also had a 47-30 edge in digs.

The Colonels will be back in action on Friday at Queens University of Charlotte.  First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
