CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Emilee Hill recorded her third triple-double of the season and three players finished with 20 or more digs as Eastern Kentucky University completed a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to beat Queens, 3-2, on Friday.
The Colonels won by scores of 20-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-17 and 19-17.
Hill finished with 12 kills, 31 assists and 30 digs.
Sarah Mitchell contributed 16 kills with just four errors, 20 digs and three blocks.
Josie Schmitendorf added 27 digs. EKU totaled 102 digs as a team, 21 more than the Royals, limiting Queens to a .144 attack percentage.
Carson Ledford broke a 7-7 tie in the fifth set with a kill. Mitchell followed with a kill after the side switch and the Colonels led 9-7. Back-to-back points, starting with a kill from
Kambree Lucas put EKU on top by four, 13-9. Another kill from Lucas gave EKU match-point at 14-11, but the Royals scored four straight to get their own match-point at 15-14. A kill from Hill tied it up again. The Colonels got to match-point at 17-16 and then 18-17 on a kill from Mitchell. A Queens attack error, which was reviewed by officials for a touch, ended the set, 19-17, and completed the comeback for the visitors.
Ledford finished with 11 kills and eight blocks.
Queens (5-13, 2-5 ASUN) scored the first four points of the first set and took a 7-1 lead on a block from Kayla McDuffie and Jordyn Johnson. The Colonels got as close as three a couple of times, including 20-17 on a solo block from Ledford. However the visitors couldn't get over the hump in a 25-20 loss.
The Royals started the second set strong as well, scoring three straight to take a 6-point edge at 10-4. EKU closed to within three, 15-12, on a kill from Lucas. Queens scored five of the next seven to move out in front by six, 20-14. The Royals took the set, 25-18, on a kill from McDuffie.
EKU (13-7, 4-3 ASUN) stayed alive with a third set victory. The Colonels scored the first three points of the set. A solo block from Mitchell made it 10-5. Three straight points pushed the margin to 12.
AG Vandagriff's kill made it 20-8. An ace off the serve of Lucas ended the set, 25-13, and kept the match going.
Vandagriff went on to post 12 kills and four blocks in the match.
The Colonels stayed hot in the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead on a kill from Ledford. Hill made it 7-3 with a kill. Queens was forced to burn a timeout after back-to-back attack errors handed EKU an 11-6 advantage. An ace from Schmitendorf put EKU out in front by six, 19-13. Hill completed the team's comeback from a 2-0 deficit with a kill to finish the fourth with a 25-17 win.
Emma Norris led the Royals with 14 kills. She had just three errors for a .333 attack percentage.
EKU finished with 64 kills, compared to 57 for the home team. Queens served up nine aces, compared to only three for the Colonels, but the Royals totaled 11 service errors. Queens had a 14-10 edge in blocks.
The Colonels will play at West Georgia on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. The match will air live on ESPN+.
