Colonels Go On The Road And Beat Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
In a match-up of in-state Atlantic Sun Conference rivals, Eastern Kentucky University beat Bellarmine, 3-0, on Wednesday in Louisville.
 
The Colonels won by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-19.
 
AG Vandagriff led EKU (11-7, 2-3 ASUN) with 10 kills.  She made just one error, posted a .500 attack percentage and had two blocks.  Emilee Hill added eight kills and 15 assists.  Carson Ledford finished with six kills with no errors in 10 attempts for a .600 attack percentage.  She also totaled three blocks.
 
As a team, the Colonels hit .283 with just 12 errors in 116 attempts.  EKU out-blocked the Knights, 7-2,  and held Bellarmine to a .080 attack percentage.
 
With the first set tied 4-4, the Colonels scored six straight to begin to pull away.  Paige Wagers ended the run with a kill to give the visitors a 10-4 edge on the scoreboard.  Vandagriff's kill pushed the lead to eight, 16-8.  After the Knights closed to within six, 20-14, EKU scored the final five points of the set.  An ace off the serve of Kambree Lucas ended the opener 25-14.
 
The Knights got off to a quick start in the second, taking a 7-4 lead on a kill from Jayda Harris.  However, the quick start ended just as quickly.  The Colonels scored 14 straight points to turn it into a rout.  Ledford gave EKU the lead, 8-7, with a kill.  She doubled up Bellarmine, 14-7, with another kill.  Josie Schmitendorf's ace ended the run and made it 18-7.  Sophomore McKenzie Laubach ended the set, 25-12, with a kill.
 
Payton Parsons tied the third set, 4-4, for Bellarmine with a kill, but the Colonels scored the next four points and led the rest of the way.  An ace from Cooper Abney and an error from the Knights made it 8-4 in favor of EKU.  A kill from Wagers stretched it to a 6-point lead, 13-7.  A kill from Ledford followed by a BU error made it 18-9.  Vandagriff ended the set and the match with a kill.
 
Natalie Bland led Bellarmine (4-11, 1-4 ASUN) with 10 kills.
 
EKU returns to Richmond to host first-place Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday at 2 p.m.  There will be a t-shirt giveaway at the match.
